To paraphrase Jack Kerouac, "The best teacher is experience, not someone else's, but your own." Our whole journey, hitchhiking along Steinbeck's Mother Road, turned out to be one hell of an experience. Neither Kerouac nor Steinbeck had done it the way we did it. They had cars―we had thumbs. What was it that drove a couple of young guys from Toronto, to think they could hitchhike all the way to Los Angeles? A Los Angeles, that less than two months earlier, had experienced one of the worst racially charged riots in the county's history. However, this story is not about that. This story is about the eye opening experiences of two Canadian boys who wanted to test their metal and so they took a trip along the most famous highway in the world Route 66.
